Polyphonic Ringtones
It’s not only the cellphone that can be readily exchanged. It is also possible for the ringtone, that resounds on your phone, to be changed at your wish.
Everyone understands that a free ringtone is an acoustic signal. It is played when a call is incoming on a cellphone. There are two types of ringtone available: the mono-tone and the poly-tone. Monophonic tones are when only one tone is heard at one time, polyphonic tones are when more tones are heard at the same time. Whichever you choose depends on the type of cellphone you have.
Polyphonic means more than one tone. Hence polyphonic ringtones have more than one tone. With every step, they are coming closer to realmusic. With a monophonic ringtone this was never realisable. As well as the ringtones that are available on your cellphone – many companies are selling ringtones on television and on the internet. These offers are generally very good value.
Polyphonic ringtones are available in different formats:
-
1. Midi-Ringtones
These are the easist and most readily available ringtones! Many single tones are played together, as a piece of music, coming very close to the real music version. It's often possible to get free midi ringtones somewhere online.
-
2. MP3 & Realtones
Many new cellphones have the capability to play MP3s directly as ringtones. It is then possible to convert your favourite CD into MP3 format and choose a song as your ringtone. Realtones allow the use of recordings as ringtones.
The best quality sound to use is the MP3 format. With this format nothing is changed or altered. The complete sound is played and not just one tone at a time! Take care when buying a new cellphone that it has the capability to play MP3s. As this is a relativley new technology, many of these cellphones may be more expensive.
MP3 und Realmusic Ringtones are considerably bigger than midi-tones! For a complete MP3 ringtone, you must have round about 500 KB of space available on your cellphone. A midi-tone only needs a few kilobytes. As a result, only a few MP3 tones can be stored on your cellphone at any one time – until the space is full. Many midi-tones can be saved on your cellphone without worrying how much space they are taking up.
